Pre 40 godina, preciznije, 14. decembra 1980. godine osnovan je najtrofejniji sportski klub Opštine Opovo, Atletski klub “Spartak”, koji nosi ime Jovana Mikića – Spartaka, istaknutog atletičara Kraljevine Jugoslavije, rođenog u Opovu, u kući gde je danas obdanište pored škole. Kroz treninge i takmičenja kluba prošlo je više od tri hiljade mladih, u sekcijama u Sakulama, Opovu, Barandi, Sefkerinu i Idvoru. Do 1988. godine centar kluba bio je u Sakulama, a od tada u Opovu. Klub je imao i ima reprezentativce u svim kategorijama, od pionira do seniora. Čak i nekoliko rekorda Vojvodine i Srbije i dan danas je u vlasništvu Spartaka. Ivan Zebić, Soni Darijević, Srđan Nećakov i štafeta 4x60m su još rekorderi Vojvodine i Srbije.

Spartak je organizovao dvadeset maratona Sakule – Opovo, zatim „Najbrži u Jugoslaviji na 1.000m“, to isto i u Srbiji, državno kros prvenstvo, tri pokrajinska prvenstva, više biciklističkih trka, „igre bez granica“, puno školskih i ostalih takmičenja. Klub je imao i svoje amatersko pozorište sa više od 50 odigranih predstava, gde su glumci bili atletičari i prijatelji kluba. Organizovano je i mnogo radnih akcija radi obezbeđivanja sredstava za takmičenja, opremu i mnogo visinskih priprema u Gornjem Statovcu, na Radan planini. Spartak je bio i ostao omiljen kod mladih, ali starijeg dela stanovništva, međutim, uvek je bio u drugom planu kada je u pitanju finansiranje. Od društva je dobijao godišnje jednu do dve prosečne plate i bio prinuđen da se na razne načine snalazi kako bi opstao. Čuvenu maskotu „Beogradskog maratona“, koja je čak i predstavljala Beograd u kandidaturu za Olimpijske igre 1992. godine, uradili su atletičari uz pomoć prijatelja kluba Srđana Savulova. Mnogo je vrhunskih sportskih ostvarenja atletičara bilo: počev od Čede Banovca, Dragana Andrejića i Save Lazića, svi reprezentativci Jugoslavije, a iz Sakula, zatim Ivana Devića, Dragana Kapunca, Živka Filipovića i Divne Lakičin, svi iz Idvora i reprazentativci Vojvodine i Srbije.

Zatim serija uspešnih iz Barande, počev od vanserijskog Srđana Nećakova, Saše Radusinovića, Milana Vitolića, Dragana Vasića, Saše i Biljane Ristović, Gordane Marković, Save Popova, Tamare Radin, Mladena Banovca, Danila Babinog, Marka Živanova, Marka Jovinog, Teodore Vasić… Blistavi šampioni iz Sefkerina počev od Ivana Zebića, Saše Jovanov, Biljane Petkovski, Ivana Ristića, Stefana Jovanova velike nade u bacanju kugle, kao i mnogo njih iz Opova, rekordera u skoku u vis Sonija Darijevića, koji je glatko pobeđivao čak i kasnije evropskog i svetskog prvka Dragutina Topića, zatim Božidar Marković, Ljiljana Ilić, Goran Nikolić, Dejan i Bojan Mihajlović, Dejan i Bojan Vasiljev, Nenad Petronić, Darko Dumbelović, Saša Spasojević, Branka Lekić, Miroslav Vladul, Goran Lekić, Bojan Petrović, Aleksandar, Marina, Goran i Nemanja Stojanović, nenadmašna Jovana Jovanović, Danijela Savić, Boris Mojsa, Mihajlo Vanović, Saša Nestorov, Dušan Bogdanov, Vasilije i Jelica Valadžija… i još mnogo, mnogo njih. Sve su to najmanje prvaci Srbije bili. Bojan Vasiljev čak zvanično tri puta najbolji sportista južnog Banata, jednom i ispred čuvenog košarkaša Darka Miličića, kasnije NBA košarkaša.
Nemanja Stojanović deset puta prvak Vojvodine u krosu, šest nastupa je imao za reprezentaciju Srbije, između ostalog i na ekipnom Evropskom prvenstvu u Tel Avivu u Izraelu, više puta prvak Srbije na deonicama od 3.000m, 5.000m, 10.000m. Saša Stolić državni prvak u maratonu i treći na Balkanu… Spisak uspešnih je vrlo dugačak, a još duži onih koji su voleli i vole „Spartak“, bukvalno žive i raduju se za klub. Spartak je i zvanični kros prvak Vojvodine 19 puta. Dva puta se dogodilo da sve tri medalje na prvenstvu Srbije osvoje članovi kluba (Saša Nestorov, Dušan Bogdanov i Saša Jovanov). Fantastičan kvalitet kod pionira i juniora, manje u odnosu na njih kod seniora, sa izuzetno malo sredstava. Da je društvo podržalo kako treba bisere „Spartaka“ i medalje sa evropskih i svetskih prvenstava sada bi bile u Opovu. Bez obzira, Spartak se voli, za druge se navija. I osnivač „Spartaka“ Milorad Kovačević voleo je Spartak više od bilo čega i dao mu sve što je imao i mogao i zbog toga je Spartak neprolazan, istorija uspeha, ljubavi i požrtvovanja.
Jedinstven i neponovljiv, ne samo u našoj opštini već i u Srbiji. Za Spartak iz Opova znaju svi na Balkanu i bivšoj Jugoslaviji, zbog brojnih šampiona, koji su rasli i trenirali u vrlo lošim uslovima, što ih nije omelo da dohvate zvezde. Korona je sprečila proslavu jubileja 40 godina, nečeg što je neponovljivo. Čim se steknu uslovi, zdravstveni pre svega, biće održan svečani skup – 40 godina „Spartaka“. I najvažnije: svi koji su na bilo koji način bili u „Spartaku“, takmičari, treneri, sponzori, prijatelji kluba, mogu biti vrlo, vrlo ponosni. Jer Atletski klub „Spartak“ Opovo odavno je već postao institucija i sportski brend Opštine Opovo.
Možda ovaj prilog treba započeti kao bajku. Nekada davno kada nije bilo interneta i mobilnih telefona, kada su i fiksni telefoni bili retkost, ljudi su korenspodirali pismima, telegramima, razglednicama i novogodišnjim čestitkama. Mlađim čitaocima ovo se sigurno čini kao bajka, ali nije u pitanju baš tako daleka prošlost.
Posebno su bile zanimljive novogodišnje razglednice – čestitke. Uoči božićnih i novogodišnjih praznika, čestitke su se kupovale na „veliko“ i slale rodbini, prijateljima i poslovnim partnerima uz najlepše želje u novoj godini. Likovni sadržaj čestitki je uglavnom bio vezan za zimske motive, decu i Deda Mraza (Božić Batu), ali je bilo i drugih sadržaja.
Opštinska narodna biblioteka Opovo poseduje lepu zbirku novogodišnjih čestitki koje su joj decenijama slali čitaoci, poslovni partneri i prijatelji. Povodom božićnih i novogodišnjih praznika deo ove zbirke je izložen u prostorijama opovačke biblioteke.
Autor prve novogodišnje čestitke u komercijalnom smislu je bogati engleski industrijalac Ser Henri Kol. On je 1843. angažovao umetnika Džona Kalkota Horslija da dizajnira prazničnu čestitku za njegove prijatelje. Zvanično je kraljica Viktorija 1840-tih pokrenula trend koji je ubrzo prerastao u tradiciju.
Materijali su postajali bolji i vremenom su se pojavile čestitke u litografskoj tehnici, potom štampane i ostalo je istorija. Iako u opadanju zbog razvoja elektronske pošte, ovaj lep običaj ipak je opstao do danas.
